What is a Scleral lens?
A scleral lens is a little bigger than a traditional soft contact lens. A Scleral lenses rests on the Sclera (the white part of the eye) distributing its weight over a larger area. New lens materials and high technology manufacturing puts scleral contact lenses at the forefront of Keratoconus treatment.
Why are scleral Contact Lenses a better option for treating Keratoconus?
- Scleral Lenses Compared to corneal collagen cross-linking Surgery (CXL)
A treatment called corneal collagen cross-linking is a Surgical Procedure which may help to slow or stop keratoconus from progressing, possibly preventing the need for a future cornea transplant but since it’s not a refractive procedure, corneal collagen cross-linking does not improve Vision or Quality of Life. This treatment may be offered in addition to use of Scleral Lenses but it has also been observed that Regular use of Scleral Lenses also slows down keratoconus from progressive thus CXL is not required before every Scleral Lens fitting.
- Scleral Lenses Compared to Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses or Hybrid Lenses
From an eye physiology standpoint, both rigid gas permeable lenses (RGP or Hard Contact Lenses) and scleral lenses, allow the eyes to receive sufficient oxygen in almost all cases, however scleral contact lenses provide improved comfort and better more stable vision than traditional gas permeable lenses (Hard Contact Lenses). Scleral lenses also provide better visual acuity, durability and comfort then hybrid lenses. Keratoconus experts now agree scleral contact lenses are the treatment of choice for patients with Keratoconus and irregular corneas.
Why do Scleral contact lenses provide better vision than glasses or traditional Contact Lenses in Keratoconus?
Scleral lenses are effective for correcting vision in persons with keratoconus because they do not require the close surface-matching fit of standard contact lenses. In fact, scleral lenses do not sit on the corneal surface at all. Instead, they sit on the white of the eye—known more technically as the sclera—and then vault over the entire cornea. This vault, chamber, or reservoir is filled with a pure, preservative-free saline solution, which serves two basic functions: 1) to keep the eye hydrated and healthy, and 2) to compensate for any irregularities in the shape of the corneal surface.
Scleral lenses offer several advantages over other methods of management for keratoconus, making them a preferred option for many patients with this condition. Here are some of the key advantages:
1. Improved Vision: Scleral lenses provide excellent visual acuity by creating a smooth and stable optical surface over the irregular cornea. This helps to minimize distortions and aberrations, resulting in clearer and sharper vision compared to other forms of correction.
2. Comfort: The design of scleral lenses allows them to vault over the sensitive cornea, resting on the more insensitive sclera. This reduces the chances of irritation and discomfort, making them much more comfortable to wear, even for extended periods.
3. Long-lasting Moisture: The space between the back surface of the lens and the cornea acts as a reservoir for tears, ensuring constant lubrication for individuals with dry eyes. This is particularly beneficial for those with keratoconus, as they often experience associated dry eye symptoms.
4. Stability: Scleral lenses have a larger diameter than traditional contact lenses, providing better stability on the eye. This stability ensures that the lenses stay in place, even during eye movements, offering consistent and reliable vision correction.
5. Customization: Each scleral lens is custom-made for the individual’s specific eye shape and condition. This personalized fitting allows for optimal comfort and vision correction, leading to better outcomes for patients with keratoconus.
6. Protection and Healing: The space beneath the lens acts as a protective barrier against external factors, shielding the compromised cornea from irritants and aiding its healing process. This protective effect can be especially beneficial for those with advanced keratoconus or corneal scarring.
7. Versatility: Scleral lenses can be used for various corneal irregularities beyond keratoconus, such as corneal ectasia, post-corneal transplant, and severe dry eye syndrome. This versatility makes them a valuable tool for managing a wide range of complex eye conditions.
8. Avoiding Surgery: For some keratoconus patients, scleral lenses can provide an effective non-surgical alternative to more invasive procedures like corneal cross-linking or corneal transplantation.

If you are ready to proceed then the next step is for us to conduct a complete eye exam including a Corneal Topography. Making a determination of your best corrected visual acuity is helpful in addressing the quality of vision you achieve and conventional vision correction such as glasses. Evaluating your ocular health also allows us to rule out other potential issues that may also affect your vision. Finally discussing the result of our findings along with a review of potential treatment options lets us put together a plan of action to help recover the most vision.
– Therapeutic Contact Lens Evaluation:
We will conduct a few other test to evaluate your corneal health. This initial information is important allowing us to establishing a baseline and to monitor the health and stability or progression of your cornea. We will select an initial diagnostic lens from the data collected and place the scleral lens on your eye. Once we have verified the diagnostic lens will provide an optimal starting point. Then we will have you rest with the lens in your eye for about 30 minutes. After the stabilization period we will then check the fit and vision with the lens to optimize your comfort and vision.
With all this collected information, we will design your custom lenses. Each scleral lens is custom manufactured in USA and takes approximately 15-20 days to design, manufacture and shipped.
